Directory in a file management is a collection of files stored in several folders. Cpanel has several directory files stored with different functions. When you buy a hosting package, you will be given space on the server with the following directory structure:

: Home is the parent directory of your web host account, this directory is the directory under it.

: Don't tamper with the files in the folders I've marked, unless you know what you're doing.

: The directories I've marked are relatively safe directories for you to tinker with, delete or use to store files. The directories are public_ftp, public_html, www, and tmp. Here's the explanation:

  • Public_ftp is a directory that you can use to store files on the hosting server that have nothing to do with your website. So for example you want to save word files, images or documents to the hosting server, then you can save them in this directory without having to be afraid of being mixed with website files.
  • Public_html is the directory where you can store your website files. If you want to create a website that can be accessed by visitors via the internet, then you must place your website files here.
  • www is just a shortcut to public_html, therefore what is contained in public_html you can also see and access through the www directory.
  • tmp is a folder where temporary files are stored. These temporary files usually contain statistical data on your website.
